The Singapore Green Labelling Scheme (SGLS) was initiated by the National Environment Agency and launched in 1992 by the Ministry for the Environment and Water Resources.
The objectives of the SGLS certification are, firstly, to help consumers distinguish green labelled products from those which are less environmentally friendly or uncertified, so they are able to make a more informed choice with their purchase. Secondly, to add value to products by helping with market access to countries that require third-party validation on environmental attributes of products imported.
The Singapore Green Labelling Scheme is part of the Global Ecolabelling Network, or GEN, which comprises environmental performance recognition, certification and labeling organisations. The GEN aims to improve, promote and develop the 'ecolabelling' of products and services. To date, the SGLS has more than 1,600 products certified under its scheme.
Currently, the SGLS secretariat is working on a website - the Green Label . It is a directory which lists eco-friendly products, and where all Green Label applications and renewals can be transacted in a simple, paperless process. The secretariat will be launching the Green Label website for online application on 1st December, 2010.
At the same time, the new Green Label application and renewal fees will be revised to SGD$1,500 and SGD$1,000 respectively, with effect from 1st December 2010. The fees adjustments are necessary to enable a non-profit organisation like the Singapore Environment Council to keep up its work in developing and administering green product certification.
We look forward to your continuing support in the work for sustaining and value adding to environmentally friendly products.
